Stories of sea journeys mesmerize readers with images of longing, discoveries, hardship and survival, of determination and being lost, of the width of the open sea, the magic of foreign destinations; they tell us how men and women face up to the elements of wind and water, how they defeat them or are defeated.
But how and why do contemporary artists access the theme of sea journeys, island hopping and transoceanic concepts, what are their motivations and intentions, and which modes of expression do they employ?
These questions were addressed in the exhibition Voyage: sea journeys, island hopping and trans-oceanic concepts at Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Germany, in 2013. Voyage, purposefully shown in a land-locked city, brought together 11 respected international artists and a book art section, whose work considers maritime themes. The curators, artists Imi Maufe and Rona Rangsch, have ensured Voyage lives up to its name by becoming a touring exhibition. Voyage Boxed - a portable version of the exhibition - is their creative solution to the challenge of touring diverse works to different locations simultaneously. This miniature version of the exhibition is reminiscent of the 'ditty boxes', containers in which sailors on long sea voyages kept their precious belongings, and which Scottish artist John Cumming pays tribute to in his work. The artists were invited to contribute new multiples, in a format of 14.8x 14.8cm. Voyage Boxed includes artworks by 16 Voyage artists and the two artist-curators, as well as the original exhibition catalogue. It has been produced as a limited edition of 50, each artist receiving two copies. selected contributions from the edition Contributions include various printing techniques on single page and folded formats, photography, mixed media, CD and paper cut. For more detailed information on the individual contributions download the original leaflet from inside the Box.
