spc Nature happens. Nature's Nature

series, photography and text, size variable, 2014

spc The ongoing project Nature happens. is based on my fascination of both the diversity and complexity of living nature and the boldness of scientists who methodologically address the complex and multi-layered interplay of mechanisms, intrinsic system properties and preconditions underlying the development of life on all scales. It is my point of view that the scientific insights gained do not lessen the magic inherent to nature; rather, they reveal deeper layers on which we can see a different not less astounding face of life.

The series Nature's Nature is concerned with the underlying principles and phenomena that allow for the formation, development and sustainment of the stunning phenomena of life. They are playing an overarching role, which makes them little tangible and hard to grasp − they are mirroring nature's nature. Those principles and phenomena include emergence, self-organization, nonequilibrium, phase transition, criticality, pattern formation, nonlinearity and spontaneity. The terms are combined with photographs that either underline, caricature, or contradict them to provoke an irritation in the viewer's eye.

The presentation with slide projectors is a metaphor for the scientific visualization of structures and phenomena that are invisible to the bare eye. The static character of the projection counteracts the dynamics of the processes under consideration.

Installation with slide projectors, Künstlerhaus Dortmund, 2015

The work was realised during and subsequently to Artist-Residencies at RONDO Ateliers, Graz, AT and at the Saari Residence, Hietamäki, FI.
